2d: Joseph's coat
Audience: Key Stage 1
Year Group: 2
Through this unit children will learn to use a graphics program to design
a model of a simple coat linked to the story of Joseph's coat of many
colours. They learn to use simple paper patterns to make a coat and simple
joining techniques for fabrics. They learn to communicate their ideas
through talking, freehand drawing and using a graphics program.

Plan 1: Repeating patterns
Children will understand how repeating patterns in textiles and
paper are made. Children will
be able to identify the area of design used to make a repeating
pattern. Children will
be able to talk about the difficulties of creating an accurate
repeating pattern and methods that make it easier.

Plan 2: Creating a repeating pattern using a graphics package
Children will be able to copy and paste to create a repeating
pattern. Children will
understand the benefits of using a graphics package to create a
repeating pattern.

Children will know the story of Joseph. Children will
be able to join the component parts of a simple coat. Children will
be able to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using
different tools to join.

Children will be able to use a pattern to cut out material.

know what appliqué is. Children will
be able to create a simple appliqué
design using the Joseph story as inspiration.

Children will be able to talk about appliqué
designs, their effect and how they are made. Children will be able to use a
pattern to cut out pieces of material. Children will be able to follow
a design to make an appliqué
picture.

Children will be able to create a cardboard printing tile. Children
will be able to print a repeating pattern. Children will
be able to carry out a method of joining the coat pieces.
