Unit 3d: Photograph Frames
Audience: Key Stage 2

Lesson Plans

Lesson Plan 1: Investigating free standing items
Children will notice and question the role of structures in our everyday lives.  Children will be able to identify the triangle as the model for creating the strongest structure.  Children will explore structure using technology equipment.

Lesson Plan 2: Investigating Photograph Frames
Children will notice and question the role of structures in our everyday lives through an investigation of how picture frames stand up.  Children will be able to make links between the way a frame may stand up and how it looks.

Lesson Plan 3: Designing my own Photograph Frame
Children will continue to notice and question the role of structures in their everyday lives.  Children will be able to apply their knowledge of structures to their own design.  Children will be able to make links between the way a frame may stand up and how it looks.

Lesson Plan 4: Making my own Photograph Frame
Children will practically apply their knowledge of structures to their own design when making.  Children will continue to make links between the way a frame stands up and how it looks.  Children will learn the importance of planning and following work in Design and Technology.

Lesson Plan 5: Evaluating my own Photograph Frame
Children will be able to critically assess their own frame by examining its features.  Children will identify improvements that could be made.  Children will be able to compare their finished product with their original design.

Lesson Plan 6: Comparing my frame with one made by a classmate
Children will be able to critically evaluate their own design against a partners design.  Children will be able to talk about the strengths and weaknesses of their own and others work.

Lesson Plan 7: Following another plan
Children will understand the importance of a clearly planned design for someone else to follow in the 'making' process.  Children will be able to follow instructions and interpret a plan.

Worksheets

PDF: Investigating free standing items
A writing frame for children to record 3 free standing items, with space to draw an annotated diagram.  Lines beneath the box allow children to record structural features they have noticed and comments on how the object is stable.

PDF: Investigating photograph frames
A simple writing frame for children to make comparisons between 2 photograph frames.  Children are asked to draw and label a diagram to explain how the structures stand.

PDF: Investigating photograph frames questionnaire
A questionnaire to help children focus on the successful design of 2 different photograph frames.  Children think about appearance, stability, purpose and ease of use.

PDF: My design for a frame
A simple planning sheet to focus children on a design for a photograph frame.  Allows children to plan for materials needed and the sequence of actions to create the product.  A useful guideline for children to follow.

PDF: Evaluating my frame
An evaluation sheet to enable children to compare their finished product with the original design.  Children are asked to draw their finished photograph frame, and to consider the questions posed at the bottom of the worksheet.  Comments on the frames success at achieving what was set out can be recorded on the reverse.

PDF: Comparing my own photograph frame with…'s
A worksheet for children to compare their finished photograph frame with that of a friends.  Children record the appearance and structure of the frame, awarding marks out of 10.  Children are finally asked to decide on a winning frame and to analyse why it was successful.
