Warm up
Ask children to find a space and sit down. Choose a child to
describe how their body feels and how they think it will change
during the lesson.
Ask children to
travel in and out of each other while moving in different directions
- forwards, backwards, sideways. Ask them to run and stop - repeat a
number of times. Ask them to run again but this time on the command
'stop' they should turn their body right round before running off
into another space. Can they run in different directions into a
space then turn right around and run into another space?
Floor Work
Ask children to find as many different ways of jumping as they can.
Remind them they can use different combinations of feet to take off
and land. Give children time to explore different ways then choose a
selection of different jumps to demonstrate to the class. Ask
children to describe in detail what they see, thinking about the
patterns that feet make and the direction of movement.
Ask children to
investigate the kinds of jumps they can make when moving sideways,
backwards and with a turn. Can they use their hands as well as their
feet to make different jumps? Can they use different jumps to create
different pathways? Interact with children and help them to develop
skills and describe what they are doing. Choose jumps that show
different pathways for demonstration.
Tell children
to join two or three jumps together to show a change of direction or
turn. Ask them to repeat and practice them because they will be used
as part of their sequence for this lesson.
Ask children to
run, stop, then sink down slowly into a sideways roll and come up
into a standing position again. Can they roll in a stretched shape
as well as a curved shape? Can they roll in different directions and
stand up ready to run again? Choose a few children to demonstrate
their movements and get other children to describe what they are
doing paying attention to direction and pathway.
Ask children to
work in fours to put out large mats. Choose a child who can do a
forwards roll correctly and let them demonstrate the movement to the
rest of the class. If anyone can do a backwards roll demonstrate
this too. Talk about making the movements safely. Give children time
to practice different rolls upon the mats.
Explain to
children that they should make a sequence of three 'unlike'
movements which should include a run, jump and a roll. They should
try to include different pathways in their sequence. Remind children
there needs to be a clear beginning, middle and end to their
sequence so they will need to think about body shape and moments of
stillness. Give children time to create and practice their sequence
then choose some children to demonstrate. Ask the rest of the class
to look our for different pathways used.
Apparatus
Each group should collect a bench and position it before their mat.
Explain to children that they will be using the bench and mat to
transfer their sequence ideas from the floor to apparatus.
Ask children to
find ways of using their hands and feet to make a zigzag pathway
across the bench. Let them practice for a few minutes then choose
some children to demonstrate. [They will probably have included
movements like bouncing from one side of the bench to the other with
their feet while keeping their hands on the bench. Discuss the
movements talking about speed, pathway and parts taking the body
weight.
Remind children
that the beginning of their sequence needs a clear starting point so
ask them to experiment with a body shape for starting and then a way
of moving towards the bench and getting on to it. When they have
chosen their preferred starting position and movement towards the
bench ask them to combine this with their zigzag pathway along the
bench.
Challenge
children to find a way of getting their body high at the end of the
bench and then moving into a roll of their choice on the mat. Ask
them to practice and repeat this movement a number of times so that
they can remember it. Choose some children to demonstrate their
sequence and others to discuss what they see. Can they suggest how
any of the sequences could be improved?
Cool Down
Remind children how to put the mats and benches away safely then
when children have done so ask them to sit quietly on the floor in a
large class circle. The teacher makes a shape and this is passed
around the circle. Other children can be chosen to make different
shapes for other children in the circle to copy and pass round.
Everyone then relaxes while the teacher talks about the skills
learnt and the sequences made in today's lesson.
