Children will learn about clubs and activities attended by other children that help to promote fitness.

Curriculum 2000 Objectives

P.E.: 3a) b) c), 4b), 8b) c) d)

Lesson Length

45 mins

Resources Needed

Mats and a piece of large apparatus for each group.

Lesson Summary

Warm up
Ask children to find a space and sit down. Ask children to say why exercise is good for them.

Ask children to skip in and out of all the spaces, changing direction when they meet another child then stopping. Repeat this a number of times.

Run in and out of all the spaces running and jumping in a space, turning and stopping. Repeat. Ask children to jump as high as they can each time they find a space. What shapes can they make in the air? Choose two or three children to demonstrate what they have done.

Floor Work
Ask children to work in fours and put out a mat for each group. Remind children of the sequences they built in the last lesson. Children could follow the sequence strips they made after the last lesson if they wish. Each pair should repeat and practice their sequence then perform it for the other couple in the group. They should describe each other's sequences.

Apparatus
Ask children to place a piece of large apparatus next to each mat. Remind children that in their partner sequence they have included jumping as a way of moving away from and towards their partner. They have also chosen a movement for crossing the mat.

Tell them you want them to explore the apparatus individually using different skills. They should find a way of getting onto the apparatus, moving along, around, under or over it and then coming off onto the floor. Ask children to repeat and practice this a number of times so that they teach their new sequence to their partner.

When children have created and practiced their sequence they should teach it to their partner. Children then decide upon a leader and both children move along the apparatus having joined the two sequences together.

Children now find a way of joining today's sequence on the apparatus to the one they created as a pair in the last lesson. Children can choose which sequence comes first. They should find a way of moving smoothly from one sequence into the other.

Try to make time for each pair to demonstrate their combined sequences to the class. Discuss the difficulties of performing a longer sequence. Ask children to evaluate each other's performance and to say what they liked about each one.

Cool Down
Put all the apparatus away and then sit in a large class circle. Ask children to say what they have learnt and what they have enjoyed in the lessons this term. Ask them what they feel they need to work at to get better and discuss any clubs they attend or could attend to keep their bodies healthy.

Extension Activities

Children could perform their sequences as a display for another class or parents.

ICT opportunities

The completed sequences could be captured on video or digital camera and displayed in a class book or on the wall. Children could write captions using a word processor.

Teacher Factfile

See lesson 7 for details of sequence already built.

Assessment Cues

Have children developed the basic skills and confidence to perform a sequence with control?

Have children enjoyed gymnastics lessons?

Are children aware of the importance of exercise in keeping their bodies healthy?
