Lesson Summary |
Warm up
Stand in a large circle so that you can see everyone. Start
with shaking wrists - get faster - stop. Then faster again and
stop. Next shake arms, then each leg, then each foot, always
getting faster and encouraging an immediate stop. Ask children
to walk on the spot, get faster and stop.
Running using
all the space in the hall. Encourage children to keep changing
direction and look for empty spaces to go to, rather than all
running in the same direction.
Introductory
Activity
Soft running (on toes). On commands 'left' touch floor with
left hand and 'right' touch floor with right hand. When
children have got the idea, add 'squat' (both hands touch floor) and
'jump'. Make sure the children continue running after each
action. Coach them to make jumps fully extended - bended
knees, using arms. What different ways can the children find
of jumping? Can they change their jump each time? Give
names to the jumps provided by the children - tuck jump, pencil
jump, star jump. Allow time for the class to practice each
type of jump.
Development
Split the class into 6 groups. Provide each group with the
apparatus map for them to set up their apparatus. Remind the
children of safety rules and system when moving and carrying
apparatus and the need to be aware of other children.
Using the
apparatus, ask children to try different ways of jumping or landing,
varying shape each time 'wide', 'star', 'pencil', 'tuck', 'stretch'
etc. Insist that each child starts in a different place on the
apparatus and that the group can use the apparatus together.
After
experimentation, ask the children to design a sequence using 2 types
of jump and showing 2 different shapes. Help the children to
decide on movements between jumps, and to make the sequence smooth
with a clear beginning and ending. Encourage children to use
all the space around their apparatus as well as actual apparatus.
Concluding
activity
Select children to perform their sequences. Ask the class to
comment on the performances - clarity of beginning and ending,
smoothness of movement, quality of jumps and landing, use of all the
space. Suggest aspects to improve as well as commenting on
creative development of sequences.
Cool down
After putting apparatus away safely, ask the children to lie on the
floor in a space. Tell them to breathe gently - in through
nose and out through mouth. Concentrate on breathing.
Listen to all the sounds you can hear inside the hall and
outside. Slowly relax the body, feel every muscle relax
working up the body - feet, legs, stomach, arms, neck. Sit up
gently.
