Ball Pools - Each child places a hoop (to represent a pool) around the work area making sure there are large spaces in between each hoop. Every child must carry a small ball and moves to instructions given by the teacher. e.g. bounce your ball and catch it three times then walk around the pools, or throw and catch your ball then jump around the pools, gradually using more energetic movements. After each instruction the teacher shouts a command like 'Ball Pools 3' and children must place their balls inside a hoop so that there are three balls altogether. They must not leave their balls until there are three balls in the hoop. Anyone left over has to stand in the middle of the room with their ball until the next instruction is given. Vary the number in the ball pools from 1 to 8.

Bean bag Badminton - use lines from a tennis or badminton court or draw two parallel chalk lines between 3 to 5 metres apart. Children work in pairs against another pair. Each pair starts with one bean bag. The aim is to slide their bean bags over their opponent's line and score a point. Their opponents have to try and stop the bean bag crossing the line. They can put their hands between the two parallel lines but not their feet.

Football League - children work in groups of three with one large ball and three cones set out in a line to make two goals - one wider than the other. They name the goals after their two favourite football teams. One child is the kicker, one the feeder and one the collector. The feeder tells the kicker which goal to aim for then after the ball has been kicked the collector collects it and returns it to the feeder. The kicker has four turns and then the children change roles.

Human Skittles - four or five children stand in a line, with feet together, and one child, the bowler, has a soft ball. That child tries to roll the ball to hit the human skittles. If they are successful the skittle has to sit down. Each child is allowed five rolls of the ball. After their turn at being bowler this child becomes a skittle and another child becomes the bowler. Repeat until everyone has had a go. A point is scored each time a skittle is knocked down and the winner is the one who has scored most points in the group.

Islands - hoops are placed around the room to represent Islands. Children are asked to walk, skip, slide, crawl, hop, jump, run, etc between the hoops and around the workspace. When the teacher shouts 'Pirates' children have to get into a hoop which represents an island. The game can be varied by shouting 'Pirates 2' or Pirates '3' etc and children have to stand in a hoop with exactly that amount of children. Anyone left over simply joins in again when the next instruction is given to move around the islands in a different way.

Kick it back - children work in pairs with one as the kicker and the other as the collector. One player sends the ball along the ground and moves back to their place, the other must then control the ball and return it to them. Agree a number of turns then swap over.

Lily Pads - Children are divided into groups of 5 or 6. Each team has 6 hoops of the same colour and they are placed in a circle to represent lily pads on an imaginary pond. Each child has their own beanbag and stands nest to their chosen hoop to begin. They must throw the bean bag into the next hoop before they can move on. If they miss they must pick up the bean bag and throw it from the position that it has landed. All children move in the same direction and can only move on if the hoop in front of them is free. They continue moving around the circle until the teacher shouts ‘Stop’.

Each child keeps their own score and at the end of the game the team adds their points together. The aim is to be the team with the highest number of points.

Lily Pad Bouncers - Lily Pads - Children are divided into groups of 5 or 6. Each team has 5 or 6 hoops of the same colour and they are placed in a circle to represent lily pads on an imaginary pond. The distance should be such that children could bounce the ball into the hoop fairly easily from the hoop before. Each child stands next to a hoop and is the ‘Bouncer’ for the hoop.

One child starts with the ball and on ‘go’ bounces the ball into the next hoop. The ‘Bouncer’ at the next hoop must catch it and then bounce it into the next hoop and so on. The team scores a point every time they bounce the ball inside and hoop and keep bouncing the ball around the circle until the teacher says stop. The aim is to be the team who scores the most points.

Pirate Ship - Children imagine they are on a Pirate Ship and must respond appropriately to commands:
Port - run to the left
Starboard - run to the right
Fore - run to the front
Aft - run to the back
Climb the rigging - children pretend to climb a rope ladder
Captain’s coming - children salute
Scrub the decks - children get down on hands and knees and begin to scrub the decks
Man overboard - children pretend to jump into the water, hold onto a partner and swim back to the ship
Walk the plank - children pretend to walk the plank by walking in a straight line
Row the lifeboats - children pretend to sit in lifeboats and row to shore

Touch it - If you have lines available in different colours on a netball, badminton, tennis court etc. then use these or/and use ‘something made of wood’, made of metal, orange, square, round etc. Give commands that allow the body to warm up gradually beginning with things like tiptoe to the blue line and touch it with your hand, walk to a square shape and put your nose on it. Gradually progress to ‘jump to something made of metal and put your little finger on it’ etc.

Volley Ball - children work in groups of 5/6 with a large sponge ball. One person throws the ball into the air and the other children have to hit it upwards so that it doesn’t touch the ground. When it does the team must sit down. The aim is to be the team that keeps their ball in the air the longest.
