Lesson Title

Changing direction on hands and feet

Learning Outcome

Children will use their hands and feet to travel in different ways thinking about direction and level.

Children will link three 'like movements' together and begin to think about beginning and completing a sequence.

Curriculum 2000 Objectives

P.E.: 8a) b) c), 3a) b) c)

Lesson Length

45 mins

Resources Needed

Enough apparatus for five or six groups to include stools, benches, mats, ladders, planks etc.

Lesson Summary

Warm up
Ask children to find a space of their own. Explain that in today's lesson they will be thinking about using different body parts and changing direction. They will think about body parts taking weight during this warm up session.

Ask children to use their hands and feet to walk in different ways around the room. Each time the teacher calls 'stop' children must choose a body part to put on the floor. Repeat the activity a number of times - each time children must find a different part of the body to rest on the floor. The pace could be gradually increased to accelerate heart rate.

Floor Work
Tell children to move around the workspace using hands and feet with their tummy facing the floor. Can they move in different directions - forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonally? Choose a few different movements for children to demonstrate. Ask the rest of the class to discuss these movements - they all use hands and feet but how are they different?

Ask them to repeat the activity but this time to have their back facing the floor. Interact with children to discuss what they are doing and again choose some to demonstrate and discuss.

Challenge children to find other movements using their hands and feet - tummies near the floor, away from the floor, hands and feet together and apart, different combinations of hands and feet.

Apparatus
Remind children about the agreed rules for putting out apparatus safely then divide them into groups to put the apparatus out.  Ask children to sit quietly when they have completed the task given and to watch and check that other children have put out apparatus correctly. Have enough apparatus for five or six different groups.

Ask each group to sit by a different set of apparatus. Explain that you want children to explore all ways of using the apparatus using their hands and feet. Remind them of the different combinations they can use, high and low movements and changes of direction. Give children some time to explore the apparatus and practice their movements. Interact with children and choose one or two to demonstrate how to use the apparatus safely. Discuss if they managed to change direction and find different ways of moving with the same body parts.

Get children to change apparatus groups and sit down. Explain to children that you want them to make a short sequence of 'like actions'. Make sure they understand what a sequence is and suggest that they use the same parts of their body to move - their hands and feet - but they should move in three different directions during their sequence. Give children enough time to work on their sequences. Choose one or two children who have met the objectives to demonstrate their 'like actions' that include three changes of direction.

Ask children to change apparatus groups again and explain that when they make up a sequence it is a good idea to be able to see when the sequence begins and when it ends. Discuss ways children could show others that they are beginning or ending their sequence - e.g. by body shape or stillness.

Cool Down
Remind children about the rules for putting the apparatus away safely then ask children to do so. When they have finished ask them to find a space on the floor and sit down.

Ask children to stand on their hands and feet then to lift their bottom as high as they can away from the ground. In this position get them to stretch every part of their body. Now ask children to slowly lower their body to the ground and curl up on their knees. Repeat these actions then ask children how their bodies felt in the stretched and curled positions. Recap on skills learnt in today's lesson.

Extension Activities

Children could extend their sequence to show 4 changes of direction, or begin to design a sequence involving a partner.

ICT opportunities

Children could take photographs of different movements using hands and feet.  These could be annotated and displayed around the hall for inspiration.

Assessment Cues

Can children change direction while moving on their hands and feet?

Are they beginning to link 'like actions' together?
