It serves an area at the west end of Aberdeen City comprising both council and private housing. The school was opened as a primary school in 1903. All teaching areas within the main building are contained in one four-storey building built round a central open area. The nursery, which is based at Beechwood School, consists of two nursery classes, Ladybirds and Sunflowers, an outdoor play area, staffroom and storage space. In the main building there are 22 self-contained rooms, which are used as follows: 17 classrooms, one ICT room, one junior/ senior library, one infant library, one music room and one general purposes room. The central open area known as the infant hall is used by all pupils as a practical activity area where social as well as educational skills can be developed.
