General information

Background: St Machar Academy is one of the 'newest' of Aberdeen's six year comprehensive Schools. It was established in 1988 as the result of the merger of Hilton and Powis Academies. The school occupies the site of the former Powis Academy on St Machar Drive and is situated close to the historical sites of King's College (Aberdeen University) and St Machar Cathedral. The original building was opened in 1939 but a large amount of work has been done in the intervening years to upgrade the school's facilities. Recent renovation and building work has already provided the school with a modern library/resources centre, information technology area and a drama studio. A full sized games hall and a second drama/television studio were opened in August 1994. The technical and home economics departments have also been refurbished. Extra-Curricular activities are seen as a very important addition to the range of educational experiences which the school offer to its pupils. In the field of sport, pupils have the opportunity to participate in badminton, cross-country running, football, hockey, table tennis, volleyball and basketball. In recent years, groups of pupils have participated in foreign trips to Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Netherlands and Austria. The music tradition in the school is very strong and, apart from the opportunity for individual instrumental tuition which is available to all pupils. The school aims to create a pleasant, caring, secure, disciplined and happy learning environment.
