General information

Background: Opened in 1975 by the Queen Mother, Aboyne Academy serves 10 villages and a large rural area in mid and upper Deeside from Torphins in the east to Braemar in the west. This well-equipped school and community centre, set in wooded grounds on the west side of Aboyne, offers a very wide range of courses to pupils, including those with special needs, who are fully integrated into the school. The integral community centre provides excellent sports and leisure facilities including a swimming pool and a well-equipped theatre complex offering a wide range of drama and musical productions throughout the year. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the many extra-curricular activities on offer which include football, hockey and baseball teams, tennis, aerobics, badminton, and chess, while hillwalking, mountain-biking and rock-climbing are offered at weekends and skiing is available in appropriate weather. There is a school choir, orchestra and ceilidh band and pupils can attend evening discos, participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and travel abroad on educational visits. The school is proud of its excellent record of raising money for charities. The school's ethos is one in which expectations of pupils and staff are high, there is a friendly atmosphere and the school works hard to maintain good links with the local community and local businesses.
