General information
Background: The burgh school of Arbroath dates back to 1564, although the Abbey, founded in 1178, was the first centre of learning. In 1861, two schools in the town united to form the High School using the building in Hill Terrace, which was later to become the public library. By the late 1880s new buildings were necessary because of increasing numbers. The new school, situated in Keptie Road, was completed in August 1985. It represents what is considered to be the best provision for today's pupils and has modern facilities for every aspect of a pupil's education. In addition to the facilities within the school building, the school also has full day-time use of the Arbroath Sports Centre with its swimming pool, games hall, gymnasium, squash courts and lounge area, and of the adjacent playing fields. All of this puts the school in a strong position to provide the pupils with a very wide range of experiences. Both in the classroom work and in extra-curricular activities, there are many opportunities for them to develop their skills, abilities and personalities. There will always be the strongest of encouragement for them to make the best use of these opportunities. Pupils are very strongly encouraged to be involved in one of the many activities available, and there should be something to interest everyone. .
