Staff: 18 (men 9, women 9).

Background: Founded in Fife in 1930; moved to its present site at Brotherton Castle on Kincardineshire coast in 1949; has evolved from being boys' boarding school to being co-educational. Stands in 62 acres of woodland and sports fields, with impressive outdoor and indoor sports facilities and its own beach. The mid-Victorian baronial castle overlooks a two-and-a-half-acre walled garden. Facilities for boarders include large rooms overlooking gardens and the North Sea. Nine out of 10 pupils learn at least one instrument; the school is the only one in the world to have its own pipe band, which plays at Balmoral and local community events. In addition to national curriculum subjects, pupils learn Latin, classical studies, and French. Art and drama are considered strengths; 89 per cent of Year 5 pupils receive individual instrumental tuition. Sports offered include rugby, hockey, netball, rounders, athletics, swimming, football, cricket and tennis. Extra-curricular activities, such as fishing, archery, shooting, carpentry, ornithology, cycling and leatherwork, are available on Saturdays and during the week. There is before-school supervision from 8am.
