General information
Background: Opened in 1837, the school is named after John Webster, a local writer and banker, who bequeathed #7,000 for the erection and maintenance of a school in the parish. Known as Webster's Seminary until 1967, Webster's High moved to its current site after World war II. The premises were refurbished between 1988 and 1990 and in summer 2000, building work began to construct four additional classrooms. Pupils benefit from the opportunity to use the adjacent sports centre, which includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, games hall and fitness room. A whole school computer network has recently been installed. Several clubs and groups meet regularly out of school hours, including the orchestra, concert band, conservation club, drama group, debating society, scripture union, chess club, quiz club and school magazine group. The school enters competitions in athletics, cross country, golf, hockey, football, rugby and sailing. Residential activity trips and educational visits are arranged within the UK and pupils may also wish to travel abroad on one of the school visits to Germany, France or Greece. A 'thriving' Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is in operation. The school caters for pupils with a range of special educational needs (SEN), including complex learning difficulties and/or physical impairment. The two teachers and care assistants in the support for learning department are able to work closely with outside agencies and make use of the school's range of educational software.
