General information

Background: Garden Suburb Junior School originally opened in 1912, but part of the original building was lost during World War II. Since then several new classrooms and halls have been built. Situated in the Hampstead Garden Suburb, the school is approximately equidistant from Golders Green and Finchley Central underground stations. There are strong links with the infant school on the same site. There is an environmental area with a pond, and a small field with six-a-side football pitch and long-jump pit. Classes do not normally exceed 30 children, and all are unstreamed. Extra help is offered to those with special educational needs and extension work is given to more able students. In addition to the National Curriculum, individual instrument lessons, sporting activities and after-school clubs are on offer. These include recorder, choir, football, netball, chess club and French club. The chess team came second in the national schools' championships in 1999 and went on to represent England in a tournament in the Ukraine. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged, and there is an active Parent-Teacher Association which raises funds for the school. Charity work is also important to the school and various fundraising events take place. The school's main charity is the NSPCC, but it also supports other charities such as the Royal British Legion. .
