General information

Headteacher: David Baldwin.

Staff: 21 (men 6, women 15).

Background: Originally a hotel, Hendon Preparatory School was founded in 1873. Its small grounds, which include a soft surface playground, are set amongst private houses. The school aims to 'provide all round education' and covers a 'wide variety' of subjects, games and activities. Extra curricular activites include fencing, rock climbing and golf. Sports include rugby, soccer, netball, rounders, cricket and swimming.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm but fair. Each class draws up its own code of conduct which is reviewed termly.'

Uniform: Purple/white blazers from Year 1, ties from reception, sweatshirts in the pre-school. 'All children are expected to wear the correct uniform at all times.'

Inspection: March 2004: 'Hendon Prep is a happy school with a purposeful, international atmosphere. It provides a good, broad and balanced education in small classes, and prepares pupils well for their senior schools. Pupils achieve good academic standards, relative to their abilities. The pupils behave and respond well in lessons, and their personal development is good. Teaching styles are inhibited by the small size and constant use of many classrooms. The majority of parents are pleased with most aspects of the school.'
