General information

Headteacher: Dawn Moore, appointed in September 2003.

Staff: 80 (men 19, women 61).

Motto: Out of the heart springs life.

Background: Founded in 1898 by a group of parents who believed in the then radical idea that boys and girls should be educated together, King Alfred School still maintains a progressive approach to education. Its defining ethos is mutual respect, valued in its staff and in its pupils, and from which position a different quality of learning may be achieved. Each child is nurtured to reach their potential and the school prides itself on an informal, friendly atmosphere that turns out happy, enthusiastic, creative and socially responsible young people who go on to pursue worthwhile, interesting or unusual careers. First names are used, there is no uniform, and there are as few rules as can be managed within a community. True to its original remit, the school is fully coeducational, it is also not selective and accepts children of mixed abilities and all denominations. Lessons do not follow the national curriculum until year 9 when exam requirements make it essential, and academic success is achieved without excessive pressure. According to a healthy set of results this year, the unconventional approach suits KAS pupils. Qualities also valued in pupils are sensitivity, empathy and communication. The high staff-to-pupil ratio helps ensure good levels of pastoral care. With the acquisition of property across the road from the original site, the school has expanded and now includes a theatre. Next year will see the opening [BR]of a new craft, design and technology block.

Special needs: Where considered necessary, pupils are referred to appropriate agencies for assessment.
