General information

Headteacher: Lynn Maggs-Wellings, appointed in September 2005.

Staff: 17 (women 17).

Background: Lyonsdown School founded in 1906 in owner's large private house. The school became a trust in 1972 with board of governors who were ex-parents. The school has high standard of performance in music, drama and art as well as an excellent academic reputation. Large red-brick Victorian house with gardens and playground extended in 1992, with six new classrooms and specialist science, music and art rooms; multi-purpose hall added in 1998. Further extension added in 2005, which includes new classrooms and music room. Pupils learn first aid, diction, chess, cookery and French in addition to national curriculum subjects. 23 Per cent of year five pupils learn musical instrument. The school offers various sports, which includes tennis, soccer skills, netball and rounders. Children raise thousands of pounds for charity every year. Year five pupils trained in first aid and become St John Ambulance Young Lifesavers, winning competitions for school. The school provides extra curricular activities after school and in lunchtimes. The school aims to provide warm and friendly school where pupils? achievements are encouraged.

Approach to discipline: Traditional Christian values are influential and there is a strong ethos of politeness and consideration for others. Good behaviour is taken for granted.

Uniform: Girls-Summer: Yellow dress, green pullover, blazer, boaters. Winter: Grey skirts/gymslips, green pullover, green coats, white blouse. Boys: Grey trousers, green blazer, green pullover, white shirt, green and purple tie. Uniform is strictly enforced.

Special needs: Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) in consultation with class teachers identifies needs and enters on the register. IEPs put into place and support given by SENCO team of assistants. Some pupils receive in-class support.

Inspection: March 2004: 'Lyonsdown School helps pupils achieve well and develop into confident and responsible young people. There is a strong sense of community in the school and pupils feel secure and valued within it. The aims and policies set out clear expectations that pupils should aim high and take a pride in themselves and the school. The implementation of these aims is effective. The purposeful working atmosphere successfully instils in pupils a desire to learn. The school is well placed to meet the regulatory requirements that it does not meet at present.'
