General information

Background: Founded 1900. Situated off the A635 Barnsley to Huddersfield Road, about two miles north west of Barnsley town centre. Barugh Green is a semi-rural commuter village, close to open country side with Cannon Hall and Bretton Park close by. Buildings date from early 1970s; nine classrooms (including mobile), multi-purpose hall and kitchen, two library areas, ICT suite, resource room, conference room, two hard paved play areas and large playing field. Attractive and well-maintained site. Three enclosed garden areas, one for use of reception children, one with pond, third to be developed. Children are encouraged to care for the environment of the school by keeping it litter free and caring for the trees, flowers and shrubs which help make it attractive. Used by the LEA as a model for excellent practice; many visiting teachers. Chosen as a Beacon School to promote good practice. Children's success in schools competitions has lead to meetings with the Princess Royal and Prince Charles. Recognised for success in extra curricular provision, including the Education Extra Distinction. Clubs include football, athletics, fun and fitness, French, drama, country dancing, construction, gardening, cricket, recorders, strings, orchestra, maths, netball, computers, embroidery, story and fact finders. 'Excellent' community links. Many events involve local community. Fund-raising for local and national charities and good causes. Slightly over-subscribed.
