General information
Headteacher: Stuart Andrews, appointed in September 2006.
Staff: 18 (men 9, women 9).
Background: Kind Edward?s Junior School is a selective, day, independent school for boys and girls at Key stage two (seven-11). The school moved on its present site in September 1990; it enjoys purpose-built premises and benefits from shared facilities with the Senior School (theatre, sports hall, information technology, playing fields, all weather pitch etc.) The Nursery and Pre-Prep department is located across the city at Weston Village. The Pre-Prep is not selective. The school is self-sufficient both in terms of staff and facilities but profits from some periods being taught by staff from the senior school, particularly art and physical education.Years three and four are taught predominantly by form teachers with specialists for French. P.E and music in years five and six are taught exclusively by subject specialists. The school enjoys considerable success on the sports field and is determined to provide as many youngsters as possible with opportunities to play representative sport and also to cater for those who enjoy sport purely as a recreational activity. The extra-curricular programme offers a wide range of opportunities including fencing, golf, street dance, chess, animation, model making, table tennis and judo amongst many others.Music, art and drama feature strongly in both curricular and extra-curricular programmes, with all year three children learning to play recorder and all year four children learning to play violin as part of their music class lessons. All pupils belong to the school choir and over 65 percent are learning a musical instrument of their choice and taking lessons with peripatetic musicians. Every year there is a dramatic production or prom concert which all children are able to take part in. 'The school aims to give each pupil the chance to develop his or her potential to the full within a happy and caring environment. While the school achieves excellent academic success, it also emphasises the importance of developing individuals who are confident, compassionate, with good social skills. The school wants to encourage each pupil to develop as an individual as well as a responsible and caring member of the community.' .
Approach to discipline: Whole-school behaviour management policy.
Uniform: Girls: Navy blazer, pinafore dress for years three and four, kilt for years five and six, long-sleeve white blouse and school cardigan. Boys: Navy blazers, white shirt, tie, medium-grey shorts for years three and four, medium-grey trousers for years five and six and v-neck blue sweater.
Special needs: No special provision is made for pupils with special needs, although individual help and support is given through an outside agency.
Inspection: October 2002: 'Both the Pre-Prep School and the Junior School of King Edward?s School are successful schools. They fulfil their stated aims of ?providing a caring, understanding and tolerant community.? Pupils are able to feel secure and at ease and as a result achieve high academic standards. The provision for pupils in the foundation stage is excellent. However, in the pre-prep school valuable teaching time is lost because of the demands of swimming and other optional activities. There is no planned or effective programme of regular maintenance at the pre-prep school. The standard of music teaching at the Junior School needs to improve.'
