General information

Headteacher: Crispin Rowe, appointed in 2004.

Background: Founded in 1552, King Edward's School provides an innovative approach to developing the potential of every individual pupil, while preserving the finest traditions of academic excellence. A co-ordinated programme of PSHE underpins the school's pastoral care and senior pupils set the example by acting as role models, guiding, protecting and supporting younger members. All pupils take nine or 10 GCSEs and 26 subjects are offered at A-Level. A reward culture informs all the work of the school; every Monday pupils who have distinguished themselves are commended in person by the headmaster. Pupils have many opportunities to develop performance skills, including a drama club. Many are asked to join the National Youth Theatre. There are also plenty of performance opportunities for young musicians. State-of-the-art sports facilities include a pavilion, sports hall and artificial pitch. There is a full programme of competitive fixtures in all the main sports, as well as inter-form competitions. In recent years, pupils have represented England in cricket, hockey and rugby. King Edward's teams have toured Canada, Barbados and South Africa.

Higher education: 97%.

Special needs: Individual help and support is given through an outside agency.

Inspection: 2002: The attitudes of the pupils, their personal development and behaviour are very good. The school makes appropriate challenges inside and outside the classroom. It engages the natural eagerness of the great majority of pupils to work with serious purpose, so that they make rapid and confident progress. Most reach levels of attainment that are better than would be expected for their age, ability and aptitude. Almost all pupils leave well prepared to take up a wide range of courses in higher education and to lead fulfilling lives.

Feeder schools: Paragon School; Heywood Preparatory School; Bathwick St Mary's C of E School; St Stephen's C of E School; Roundstone Preparatory School.

Percentage admitted according to academic ability: 100.
