General information

Headteacher: Crispin Rowe, appointed in 2004.

Background: King Edward's School aims to develop happy, confident and compassionate individuals while at the same time achieving the level of academic excellence that has made it a consistent top performer in league tables. All pupils take nine or 10 GCSEs, and 26 subjects are offered at A-Level. The A-level pass rate this year was 99.4%, with 58% of all entries being awarded an A grade. At GCSE, 74% of all entries were graded either A* or A. A reward culture informs all work; every Monday, pupils who have distinguished themselves are commended in person by the headmaster. The creative and performance arts enjoy a strong following; all pupils have the opportunity to sing in a choir or play an instrument, and there are numerous opportunities for on-stage or backstage involvement in drama. The school occupies a 14-acre site and has excellent facilities, including a new art gallery, where both pupils and professional artists exhibit their work. Sport is taken seriously a tour to South Africa in the past year was followed by local successes in netball and rugby. Individual honours have included national representation in rugby, hockey, fencing, canoeing and sailing.

Higher education: 95% (7 Oxford 7 Cambridge).

Special needs: No specific provision is given for SEN, although individual help and support is given through an outside agency.

Inspection: October 2002: The attitudes of the pupils, their personal development and behaviour are very good. The school makes appropriate challenges inside and outside the classroom. It engages the natural eagerness of the great majority of pupils to work with serious purpose, so that they make rapid and confident progress. Most reach levels of attainment that are better than would be expected for their age, ability and aptitude. Almost all pupils leave well-prepared to take up a wide range of courses in higher education and to lead fulfilling lives.

Feeder schools: Pupils are drawn from the city of Bath and immediate environs, including; King Edward's Junior; The Paragon School; Heywood Prep; Bathwick St Mary's C of E.
