General information
Headteacher: Chris Stafford, appointed in September 1998.
Staff: 31 (men 15, women 16).
Background: Founded in 1888, the school 'finds its central inspiration and purpose in the Christian tradition'. It is situated in the village of Combe Down, five minutes from the centre of Bath, and overlooks the Midford Valley. The open site has 'magnificent' grounds and facilities including modern classroom blocks, an indoor swimming pool and art and science blocks. Pupils also benefit from a theatre, gym, tennis and netball courts and and IT room. The school is proud of its 'good sporting record' and most recently won the national under-13 hockey championships. 'One of this school's great strengths is its ability to maintain the delicate balance between academic success and personal development, striving for each without ever compromising either.' .
Approach to discipline: 'Firm, friendly and fair.'.
Uniform: Boys: grey trousers, blue shirt, naval style jumper. Girls: tartan kilt, blue shirt, naval style jumper. Enforced 'rigorously.'.
Special needs: The school caters for the needs of children with moderate learning difficulties. Individual needs are assessed and suitable programmes designed to afford maximum support.
Inspection: November 2006: 'The school successfully fulfils its aims and aspirations of providing a full and varied all-round education and helping its pupils to develop their abilities to the full. It creates a happy and caring boarding and day community in which every individual counts. Pupils uphold the value system, they behave very well and they show thoughtfulness to others. There is a strong sense of service, and Christian beliefs and worship are clearly related to the needs of daily school life. Leadership is energetic and innovative and is well supported by the senior management team. The school has dedicated, able and highly committed teaching and support staff, and outstanding pastoral care is delivered for all. The school?s general provision for boarders and day pupils is excellent. The pupils? spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness is very apparent, and they show sympathy, understanding and respect for others. Input, both inside and outside the classroom, is enabling pupils to broaden their horizons and extend their interests in the wider world. Academic achievements are high, pupils? learning skills are developing; and they show increasing intellectual curiosity as they move up the school. The school management has worked hard to effect improvements in the school and to provide good leadership. They are aware of what still needs to be done, especially in exploiting ICT resources, stretching the most able and promoting more independent learning. Parents are highly satisfied with the education provided, and pupils are appreciative of all the opportunities available. Since the last inspection, the school has made progress in several areas. It has enhanced its academic and extra curricular standards, and it has improved its already high quality pastoral care. There has been greater emphasis on marketing, and its governing body has developed more expertise and professionalism. Additional ICT facilities have been provided, an all-weather pitch has been re-laid, the library has been converted into an enhanced learning and resources centre, and some boarding and classroom accommodation has been upgraded. The year nine curriculum has been modified, a new PSHE work scheme has been introduced into the year 7-10 timetable, and more flexibility has been introduced into the examination option blocks, especially at AS level. The provision of EAL and learning support has been further strengthened, and the composition and operating arrangements of the senior management team have been modified, to advantage. As the school is aware, pupils have insufficient opportunities to formulate their own thinking and take a lead in their own learning. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
