General information
Headteacher: Richard Backhouse, appointed in 2005.
Background: The school's ethos places academic attainment as one of the cornerstones to life, together with personal faith, the development of potential and a lifestyle based on self-discipline, respect and service. Founded in 1868, the school has new facilities including a 25m indoor pool, gym, sports centre and sixth-form centre. With a boathouse on the River Avon, the school has distinguished itself in rowing, having produced two Olympic medallists. Hockey, netball, rugby and athletics are also strong. Drama and theatre studies are popular at GCSE and at A-level, while there is a new and well-equipped studio as well as regular theatre trips. The school's big band regularly performs at engagements in the UK, has toured France and America, and recorded two CDs. The school is a teaching centre for the Lawn Tennis Association's Academy programme, and it has nine grass and three hard courts. Other facilities include a rifle range, a rowing tank, a new indoor swimming pool and a heated outdoor pool, plus an artificial turf hockey pitch. Celebrating its centenary year this year, CCF forms an integral part of school life and is compulsory for one year. Some pupils opt for community service in later years. The Monkton Foundation was launched in 1995 to help finance capital developments as well as bursary and scholarship funds and has raised more than £3m. The pupil-run Christian Union attracts up to 150 pupils to its weekly meetings and there is a long list of other extracurricular activities from fencing to judo, clay craft and chess.
Alumni: Richard Stilgoe, composer/lyricist; Bernard Cornwell, author; Steve Williams, Olympic gold medal-winning rower.
Higher education: 98%.
Special needs: A learning support department caters for dyslexia and dypraxia.
Inspection: October 2000: Monkton Combe School, founded more than 130 years ago and standing within the evangelical tradition of the Church of England, has remained unyieldingly faithful to its roots, thanks to the commitment and loyalty of very many people. The Christian ethos of the school is distinctive and genuine. It is supported by pastoral care of a very high order and a most attractive site in the Midford Valley, just beyond the Bath rim, a position sensitively and profoundly influencing the school's development.
