General information
Headteacher: James Graham-Brown, appointed in 2000.
Background: Girls at the Royal High School have only one rule: always consider the impact of any action on other people. The value of respect for others is at the heart of everything the school community tries to achieve. Though the school has many academically able pupils, it admits girls from a wide range of abilities. A high value is also placed on achievement in the creative and performing arts and sport. The school adheres to the core requirements of the national curriculum but also goes beyond it. Girls study French, German and Spanish, for example, and have the opportunity to learn Mandarin or Latin. Girls may take part in a variety of sports, including basketball, trampolining, rugby and dance. Football has proved particularly popular, and fencing has seen a big increase in participation. Dance has a high profile at the school, while more than 250 girls have weekly individual music lessons. Informal concerts are held monthly so that those taking part can experience a friendly audience of girls and staff. Opportunities to interact with boys are provided through joint ventures with nearby schools in such areas as Young Enterprise, debating, cookery, Model United Nations, the swingband, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, drama productions and discos.
