General information

Headteacher: Titus Mills.

Staff: 17 (men 5, women 12).

Background: Housed in Georgian mansion, set in seven-and-a-half acres of wooded grounds, only mile from centre of Bath. Founded in 1911; became charitable trust in 1970; moved to present location to south of city in 1983. Pupils prepared socially and academically for senior schools, independent or maintained, folowing 'carefully-planned and well-structured' curriculum. With combination of formal and informal methods, school incorporates requirements of common entrance at 11+ and those of national curriculum. Extensive extra-curricular programme; individuals and teams gaining county and national recognition in sport, music, chess and public-speaking. Educational and foreign visits also feature prominently. Close links to community, providing service to choral society, drama group and handicapped pensioners' organisation. Pupils also encouraged to raise money for local and national charities.

Approach to discipline: 'We provide a happy, caring environment in which all children are taught the need to develop a clear understanding of right and wrong and a sense of fair play and justice. When children develop responsibility and commitment to the school as a community they will be setting standards which will always be of benefit to them and the society in which they live. Children are made aware that sanctions do exist when standards are not achieved and throughout any disciplinary process liaison with parents is maintained.'

Uniform: Boys: white shirt, long/short grey trousers, maroon v-neck sweater, navy blazer, black shoes, school tie. Girls: white blouse, grey pleated skirt, maroon v-neck sweater/cardigan, navy blazer, school tie, black shoes, pink gingham dress in summer. Enforced 'very rigorously'.

Inspection: May 2001: 'The Paragon School is a good school that serves its pupils and their parents well. Pupils reach standards that are generally commensurate with their ages and abilities in almost all subjects. In mathematics and science at the end of key stage two, standards are not always as high as they could be. In some lessons, the most able are not sufficiently challenged and this limits what they are capable of achieving. Pupils learn effectively and behave very well. Attendance is satisfactory and the quality of teaching is good. A broad range of learning opportunities enriches the curriculum but an imbalance of time allocated for subjects occurs in different year groups. Assessment, recording and reporting is thorough and the school knows its pupils well, enabling it to provide helpful support and guidance for individuals and groups. The provision for spiritual development is satisfactory and moral and social developments are very well promoted and this has a significant impact on the pupils? very good behaviour and highly successful relationships. The provision for cultural development is sound but the school does not do as much as it could to help pupils appreciate the richness and diversity of cultural traditions other than their own. Measures to promote the pupils? welfare are effective. The headmaster provides strong pastoral leadership and a clear educational direction for the school. He is ably supported by his deputy and the senior management team. The school is well managed and a strong sense of teamwork exists at all levels. While priorities for development are clearly defined and appropriate, a more rigorous approach to monitoring and evaluation would provide the school with more accurate information to improve further teaching and learning.'
