General information

Headteacher: Nick Yelland.

Staff: 106 (men 66, women 40).

Background: Founded in 1566, one of four Harpur Trust schools; moved to spacious, pupose-built new schoo building in 1974. Numerous major developments since. New junior Holland classrooms and two all weather surfaces in 2003, new refactory and six form centre planned for 2005/6. School situated on town outskirts with excellent sports facilities. Regional reputation for excellence in sport, music and theatre. The curriculum is rigorous and differentiated, to both the gifted students and the good all-rounders. A community which promotes self-esteem, respect for other and their cultures and opportunities to develop leadership and inter-personal skills. A centre of excellence with high expectations.

Approach to discipline: Cooperative and consensual, not authoratarian or confrontational.

Uniform: Uniform must be worn by all pupils from seven to 18. 'Uniform is enforced.'

Special needs: Dyslexia provision for those who are successful in the entrance assessments.

Inspection: November 2001: 'This is a busy school where pupils in both the Junior and the Senior sections are happy and relaxed, well supported by the pastoral care system, tolerant of each other and are on good terms with staff. Pupils are proud of their school and generally appreciate the opportunities open to them. They achieve good results in public examinations and they reach high standards in a range of activities.'
