General information

Headteacher: Stephen Smith, appointed in September 1996.

Staff: 98 (men 66, women 32).

Background: Bedford Modern School is a community where respect for others is promoted, self-esteem flourishes and there are opportunities to develop leadership and interpersonal skills. The origins of the school can be traced back to endowments left by Sir William Harpur in the 16th century. In 1974 the school moved to its present 46-acre site, becoming fully independent two years later and coeducational in 2003. All pupils study the common curriculum as well as three humanities subjects and two languages, and there are lessons in IT, technology, music, art and drama. Most pupils take 10 GCSEs and sixth-formers can take up to four A-levels from a choice of 28 subjects. The school has a good reputation for creative and performing arts. Drama courses are available in every year, and plays are staged regularly in the 300-seat theatre. There are opportunities for students to participate in instrumental and choral groups, and tuition is available in a range of instruments. The IT facilities include suites serving modern languages, English, geography and history. There is broadband internet access throughout the school, wireless classroom laptops and an extensive software library. Sports facilities include a sports hall, two all-weather training pitches, a boathouse and an indoor swimming pool. A new £4m sixth-form centre and refectory is curently under construction and will open in September 2005.

Homework: Average 11-year-old, 8 hours a week; 14-year-old, 9 hours; 16-year-old, 10 hours.
