General information

Background: The original school was opened in 1938 as a secondary school. In 1958 a two-storey extension was added. The school was converted into a middle school in 1973 and extensions took place between 1975 and 1981. In the last three years the school has built a new block, comprising two classrooms and new changing rooms, a floodlit multi-use games area and there are an additional ten acres of playing fields. It has recently been refurbished its two science laboratories, library and food technology room and installed a second ICT suite and a third suite with laptops. It has six interactive whiteboards. It has re-decorated the school exterior and its entrance area. The school has an extremely strong tradition for sport, music and the arts. Its extra-curricular programme is extensive, with a wide variety of clubs. Music has an important place in the life of the school with many children joining in, and enjoying, music activities in their own time. In 2003 the school has gained a 'Sportsmark Gold' award (with distinction). Children are encouraged to take part in competitive sports and taught to enjoy team games and to compete fairly. The school has excellent facilities for sports which include one hockey pitch, one rugby pitch, four mini football pitches, two football pitches, training grids, cricket wicket, an athletics track and a purpose-built gymnasium with a sprung floor surface. Educational visits are designed to be an integral part of the school curriculum. The school is a caring and supportive community that values each child and provides them with the opportunity to fulfil their potential and enjoy learning.
