General information

Background: Situated on the western edge of Kempston, near Bedford, Robert Bruce stands in 15 acres of grounds in a bend on the River Great Ouse and enjoys 'outstanding facilities and views'. It was built as a secondary school in the early 1960s and became a middle school during secondary reorganisation in the 1970s. About three-quarters of the children come from West Kempton and the remainder from the villages of Biddenham, Bromham and Stagsden. All seasonal sports are 'well provided for' and the school teams enjoy 'considerable successes locally and further afield', while its cross-country teams have competed nationally 'at the highest levels, often against older pupils'. The school has been awarded the Sportsmark Award in recognition of its contribution to sport. It has 'excellent provision' for extra-curricular activities and 70% of pupils participate in 45 clubs. The school is 'popular with parents' and is involved in a 'wide range' of community activities which have a 'significant impact on pupils' personal development'. Robert Bruce was granted the Healthy Schools' Award in January 1999 for its work on health education and in March 1998 became the first Bedfordshire Middle School to be recognised as an Investor in People. The school believes that a well-ordered, happy, caring community will best enable all who work and learn here to develop their potential to the full.
