General information

Headteacher: W S F Young, appointed in September 2000.

Staff: 75 (men 41, women 34).

Motto: 'Per Vias Sapientiae'.

Background: The school founded in 1785 and is oldest school in Belfast. The Grammar School and Preparatory Department occupy separate sites off the Antrim Road in North Belfast and there are extensive playing fields on the outskirts of the city. Almost all classes are in up-to-date accommodation. Since 1982, four new blocks have been built and most other buildings have been recently been furnished. All classrooms have a computer connected to the Internet and many classrooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards. The school also has its own swimming pool. The school?s curriculum is strongly academic. Pupils take between nine and 11 GCSEs in Year 11, and three or four A-levels in the sixth form. Physics, chemistry and biology have its own department and French, German, Spanish and Latin are all offered to A-level. An extensive games programme is offered, including rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and tennis. There are roughly 80 extra-curricular clubs and the school?s Duke of Edinburgh?s Award Scheme is the largest school based unit in the UK. The school expects high standards from its pupils.

Streaming/setting: Streaming exists only as follows: English, science and mathematics in Years 10 and 11.

Approach to discipline: The discipline of the school is firm but without severity..

Uniform: The following uniform regulations are strictly enforced:Boys: navy school blazer, grey or black trousers, white shirt, school tie, grey v-necked jumper, black or brown shoes.Girls: navy school blazer, navy pleated skirt and navy v-necked jumper (Years 7 to 9) or grey pleated skirt and grey v-necked jumper (Years 10 to 13), white shirt, school tie, black tights and plain black shoes..

Homework: Average 11-year-old, 10 hours a week; 14-year-old, 11 hours; 16-year-old, 12 hours.

Vocational qualifications: The school offers various vocational qualifications in text production, word processing, audio transcription and ECDL by OCR.

Special needs: When a pupil is identified by the parent or the primary school as having Special Educational Needs (SEN), consultation takes place with parents (and other professionals as appropriate) to establish the provision necessary. There is a literacy support teacher, who works on a one-to-one level with pupils in Years 7 to 11 who have dyslexia or other literacy difficulties. Where literacy difficulties are pronounced, a classroom assistant may be retained. Most of the school?s buildings have ramp or lift access.
