General information

Background: Founded in 1785; oldest in Belfast; grammar school and preparatory department occupy separate sites in north Belfast; extensive playing fields on outskirts of the city. Almost all classes are in up-to-date accommodation; since 1982, four new blocks have been built; most other buildings have been refurbished. All classrooms have a computer connected to the internet; many are fitted with interactive whiteboards. The school also has its own swimming pool. Strongly academic curriculum; pupils taken up to 11 GCSEs in Year 11, and up to four A-levels in the sixth form; separate departments for physics, chemsitry and biology; French, German, Spanish and Latin taught to A-level. Extensive sports programmes, including rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and tennis; about 80 extra-curricular clubs. Duke of Edniburgh Award scheme, reportedly the largest school-based scheme in the United Kingdom. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. Ethos: 'High standards are expected, but without severity.' .
