Background: Bloomfield Collegiate School originated at the beginning of this century as a small private school for girls and boys on Beersbridge Road in Belfast. After a number of moves around East Belfast it settled into new buildings on the present site in Astoria Gardens in 1962, as a grammar school for girls. The Preparatory school was added in 1968. The school has continued to evolve, and the impact of new subjects, new technology and new methods of teaching and learning has been considerable. A further building and refurbishment programme was completed in 1995, providing new, purpose-built, accommodation for art, music, technology, careers guidance and computing, together with additional provision for science, modern languages and the sixth form. The most recent phase of development was completed in 1997 with the provision of a sports hall and three all-weather tennis courts.The school is situated on an enclosed campus with direct access to the Upper Newtownards Road and other main arterial routes. All specialist accommodation is contained within the single site apart from some sporting facilities which are a short distance away. The buildings are modern, well equipped and maintained to a high standard. The campus is attractive with landscaped grounds in which are set the Main Building which is recently refurbished, a Teaching Block built in 1994 and a new Sports Hall opened in 1998. There are floodlit, all-weather tennis courts adjacent to the Sports Hall. The Preparatory Department is custom-built and occupies a section of the site adjacent to the Upper Newtownards Road.Classrooms are bright and well equipped. Specialist accommodation includes:6 Science laboratories a 3 room Technology & Design suite 4 Information & Communication Technology rooms a Music centre with a recording studio, a music technology suite and adjoining practice rooms 2 purpose-built Art rooms with pottery and photographic facilities a Gymnasium and a Sports Hall 2 Home Economics rooms a Careers suite a Library/resource centre Year 13 social centre Year 14 study rooms and social areaLifts have been installed in both classroom blocks for pupils with mobility problems and the First Aid Co-ordinator is available to assist pupils with specific medical conditions. This year the pupil toilets in the main building have been completely refurbished with additional disabled facilities included.Bloomfield Collegiate is committed to continuous improvement. A rolling maintenance programme ensures that the fabric of the school is of the highest standard. Current developments include plans to improve and update the Technology & Design suite and enhance teaching and learning through further ICT developments across all subjects and classrooms.
