General information

Headteacher: Maureen Clark, appointed in September 1997.

Staff: 5 (women 5).

Background: Hunterhouse College Grammar School for Girls and its prep department were created following the amalgamation of Princess Gardens and Ashleigh House schools in 1987. Its ethos is based on 'a policy of reward and encouragement for endeavour'. It is 'small enough to include children in whole school activities in order to boost their confidence, their sense of belonging and, above all, their achievement and success'. The emphasis is on 'traditional values' in this 'well-equipped' school, which prides itself in being 'responsive to technological changes'. Pupils are taught using a 'range of different media and resources' and there is a 'well-stocked' library in addition to class libraries. Children use 'much of the 37-acre grounds' for sport and also have full use of the senior sports facilities.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm but fair. Rewards and sanctions used; celebration of effort is routine; excellence is a habit. Close parent/teacher liaison in all matters.'.

Uniform: Boys: grey shorts, shirt, tie, saxe blue and scarlet-trimmed blazer. Girls: saxe-blue tunic/skirt, blouse, tie, saxe-blue and scarlet-trimmed blazer..

Inspection: February 2005: 'The following are the most important improvements since the focused inspection: the teachers engaged in teaching the subjects under focus have been active in addressing the few issues that were identified in the report. The schemes of work for history have been reviewed to include a greater emphasis on enquiry and more extensive use of ICT; individual target-setting has been introduced for all pupils in the lower school. The geography department has carried out systematic annual reviews and set up a development planning process which includes worthwhile and appropriate targets; departmental activities have been reviewed and even greater emphasis has been given to the use of discussion and debate as a means of improving oral performance. The business studies and economics department is working through a three-year development plan that includes the intention to review teaching and learning strategies and develop further the oral skills of the pupils; as part of this work the schemes of work are under review; further links with the business world are being developed. In home economics more opportunities for more extended writing have been incorporated into the home economics scheme at all levels; the teachers have been reviewing the provision of examination-style tasks within the GCE A level course with a view to increasing the experience of these and using these to improve performance; and the pupils are being encouraged to use more effectively self-assessment and self-evaluation exercises in order to monitor their own progress. The school has made good progress in addressing the key areas for action. The parents and the broader community can have confidence in the school?s commitment to improvement and the effectiveness of its actions in response to the findings of the focused inspection.'
