General information

Headteacher: Alan Armstrong, appointed in September 1992.

Staff: 12 (men 6, women 6).

Background: Founded in 1917, the preparatory school of Royal Belfast Academical Institution is set in six acres of grounds and playing fields in the Malone area of Belfast. Well-equipped for all aspects of teaching and extra-curricular activities, with 14 classrooms, library, computer room, music rooms, gymnasium, as well as preparatory-school and after-school rooms. Extra-curricular activities include football, mini-rugby, hockey, cricket, short tennis, swimming, cross-country, table tennis, badminton, judo, archery, chess, calligraphy, art and craft, club francais, junior music, drama, computers, cookery, photography and oil painting. Sport for enjoyment is encouraged, and school teams participate with great success in local and national competitions. There is a specialised music teacher who coordinates an excellent choir, an orchestra and a brass band. The school produces at least one major drama production every year. Pupils are interviewed before admission. Pupils sponsor a boy in Peru and raise approximately three thousand pounds each year. Boys normally join the school at P1 but can be admitted at any stage if there are vacancies. Some 40 boys transfer to the main school each year. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 6pm. Ethos: 'A very happy school where pupils thrive under the dedicated care of the staff and enjoy a wide range of varied opportunities and experiences.' .

Approach to discipline: Firm but positive, fair and consistent. Parents are fully aware of discipline policy and are kept fully informed by head and staff.

Uniform: Black blazer, cap, black-and-yellow striped tie, grey/white shirt, grey shorts (trousers for Key Stage 2 boys), grey socks, black shoes, optional grey pullover. Uniform is strictly enforced.

Special needs: Special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) is in charge of provision. Six hours a week are available for individuals and small groups. Extra support is also available from the local education authority. Specific provision for pupils with emotional behavioural difficulties and moderate learning difficulties.

Inspection: February 2002: 'Relationships throughout the department are very good. The children are friendly and co-operative; they are courteous and welcoming to visitors. The family atmosphere is a strength of the school; it reflects the commitment and care shown by the teachers and the support staff. The children show positive attitudes to learning; they are well motivated, keen to be involved and can talk with confidence and enthusiasm about their work. They are well-behaved and express appreciation of the good range of curricular and extra-curricular experiences that the department and the teachers provide. The quality of teaching observed during the inspection was consistently sound and often good or very good. The teachers show commitment to the school and to the children. They know the children well. The quality of the teachers? exposition and explanation is good. The teachers prepare systematically for their lessons; in the best practice, the work is rooted in, and springs from, the experiences and interests of the children. The teachers are aware of the range of ability in their classes and provide sensitive support to those children who need it.'
