General information
Background: Situated one mile from the A2 in attractive parkland; occupies more than 17 acres and is bordered by park, local golf club and Hurst Road, an avenue of sought-after detached and semi-detached housing. Current buildings erected in 1954 with substantial extensions during 1970s. Accommodation consists of main block, new block, music centre, and art and technology block; mobile accommodation has been gradually removed; new block for sixth form was built in 1996. Facilities for sport and physical education are outstanding; extensive playing fields on both sides of school, two major gymnasia and a multi-gym. Full symphony orchestra, as well as chamber orchestra and number of ensembles; thriving jazz tradition, with regular concerts and recitals. Comprehensive programme of sports takes place after school and at weekends; school regularly gains success both individually and as teams, while individuals have gained international honours in variety of sports. Drama is equally strong, with regular senior and junior plays. Selection for the school is by Bexley Selective Procedure; includes tests in mathematics, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Aims to create stimulating environment in which individual is central focus for all teaching and learning. Curriculum includes Latin and classical civilisation. Specialist sports college status. Over-subscribed, with more than seven applications per place. Sportsmark (2000); Sportsmark Gold (2006); Investor in People status (2005); DfES achievement award (2003).
