General information
Headteacher: Susan Woodward, appointed in January 2001.
Staff: 10 (men 1, women 9).
Background: Founded in 1983, Harenc occupies Victorian buildings formerly belonging to the local Church of England village school, together with a modern extension added in 1996 and an ICT suite opened in 1998. Facilities include a large playground bordered by trees, a separate playground for younger pupils and access to playing fields two minutes' walk away. The school is located in a conservation area and is deemed to be of architectural interest. Pupils follow the National Curriculum, with French and music as additional subjects. French, music and ICT are taught by specialist staff. Sports include rugby, football, cricket, athletics, rounders, PE, gymnastics, dance and keep fit, and the school is particularly strong at swimming. Visiting sports coaches enhance PE provision. The orchestra and choir perform for the local care home and there are strong links with the parish church and local schools. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in the school's annual play. Chess, art and sports clubs are offered and there is a strong tradition of fundraising for charities such as Love in a Box, RNLI and the Red Cross. The school makes use of educational trips and activity holidays and external speakers are often brought into the school to broaden the boys' educational experience. As prefects, older boys care for younger boys. The school has an excellent reputation for pastoral care and for success in the entrance examinations to local grammar and independent schools. Entry is selective from the age of seven, with academic ability, sibling and family connections and sporting achievements all taken into account. Selection takes the form of an interview with the head, general knowledge questions and assessment in English and mathematics.
Approach to discipline: The school has a fair and firm approach to discipline with high standards of behaviour and courtesy expected. Class teachers have a good knowledge of the boys in their care and the headteacher is keen to be a strong presence in the school.
Uniform: Light-blue blazer with yellow braid and school crest, blue cap, white shirt, grey shorts (to Year 5), long black trousers (Year 6), striped tie. Uniform code is strictly enforced and boys are proud of their uniform.
Special needs: Class teachers advise the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who prepares individual education plans (IEPs) after observation and assessment. Limited provision for one-to-one and small group support..
Inspection: February 2005: 'In most respects, the school meets its aims and aspirations to a high degree. It has reconciled the objectives of enabling pupils to succeed at competitive entry to senior schools, of implementing a broad, varied and interesting educational experience and of providing a caring and happy atmosphere for the boys. Pupils like their school and parents are pleased with the education provided. The head and staff have raised standards and broadened the education since the last inspection. This has been made possible by increases in staff, development of the management structure, including the introduction of a senior management team co-ordinators and a more rigorous approach to planning and assessment. Above all the improvements are due to the commitment of staff, managers and governors, working together. As the school is aware, it has not yet achieved the aim of ensuring that its most able pupils achieve all that they could in the curriculum as a whole or in establishing independent thought and study throughout the school. The school has improved substantially since it was last inspected and has responded very well to the recommendations.'
