General information
Background: Founded in 1930s as technical school; moved in 1937 to current building, which has been extended regularly on greenfield site short walk from centre of Bexleyheath. One of four selective schools in borough. Number of places increased in 2000 from 155 to 200 in year 7, accompanied by major building programme which provides extra specialist teaching rooms. New building to be completed in 2006, with five laboratories, sports hall, ICT facilties, and performing studio with recording facilities. Has tradition of excellence in music, with concerts at least three times a year; school assemblies provide performance opportunities for two choirs, two orchestras, concert band, and string and recorder ensembles. New performing arts block opened in 2000, with facilities for music, drama and dance. Extensive information technology facilities available; 'wide and varied' extra-curricular activities include full programme in lunch break and after school. After-school homework club with school librarian; clubs and societies include the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, science societies, Christian Union, drama and dance clubs, and charity fund-raising. Specialist performing arts college status; also specialist visual arts college status. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. British Council International School award (2005); Artsmark Gold (2006); DfES achievement award. Ethos: 'The school aims to create a hardworking and academic environment and, at the same time, a lively, caring community within which girls may grow in confidence and independence.' .
