General information

Background: Situated in south Birmingham, the school has no catchment area and the three-mile limit is used to establish a relative order of priority. Facilities include recently-refurbished library with its own computer suite, four networked computer suites and a networked room for pupils with learning difficulties. The school offers two gymnasia, hard tennis courts, indoor climbing wall and playing fields and sports include athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, hockey, netball, soccer and tennis. Other activities include camping, climbing, dance, gymnastics, personal fitness, swimming and table tennis. There are strong links with local sporting clubs. The school places 'great stress on the importance of outdoor pursuits' and offers an introduction to camping in Year 7 and activity weekends and longer camps in the upper school. Skiing and caving holidays were recently introduced and Year 8 pupils can join the Adventure Service Challenge group to gain skills to prepare themselves for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. There are visits to Germany and France, geography and history field trips. The drama club organises school productions and theatre visits, while music 'thrives' with an orchestra, string quartets, recorder ensembles and ocarina groups. Peripatetic, vocal and instrumental teachers visit weekly. Many pupils learn orchestral instruments and music is offered at GCSE. The school has 'strong links' with its local community, including with employers, partly through a work experience programme for pupils in Year 10. 'We pride ourselves on our totally inclusive provision for all pupils, regardless of background or need.' The school is over-subscribed, receiving 3.2 applications for each place.
