General information

Background: One of nationally-renowned Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham; founded in 1883; moved from original city site in 1958; extensive landscaped site four miles from city centre, which it shares with its brother school, Camp Hill School for Boys. Building extensively extended and modernised; major development in 1996 when school expanded from three to four forms. Most accommodation of 'very high standard'; new art, design and technology centre completed in 2003; new laboratories, good computing facilities, swimming pool, and splendidly-renovated hall of concert standard. New sports hall and drama facilities in 2006. Latin and drama extend list of national curriculum subjects; at A-level, girls can choose business studies and economics, psychology and theatre studies. School has achieved national success in netball; has number of county hockey players. Rugby, cricket and football recently introduced and received enthusiastically. Strengths are creative and expressive work, in which students are involved; in music, drama and art; opportunities to be involved in debating and public-speaking. Wide range of clubs includes robotics, film-making, dance and archaeology. Large amount of charity work. Strong community links, including in Birmingham's youth orchestras and ensembles. Special mathematics and computing college status from September 2005. Before-school care, from 8.15am; after-school care, until 4.30pm. Over-subscribed, with more than nine applications per place. Recommending body for training teachers (2004). Beacon status (2000); Schools Curriculum Award; Sportsmark; DfES achievement award (2000, 2001, 2002).
