General information

Background: Meadowhead was built in 1974 to replace Mill Hill School and in 1994 an extension was added to accommodate the rise in pupil numbers. It is housed in a semi-open plan building, and each base or year group has its own entrance, cloakroom, stockroom, and resource/practical area. Facilities include two playgrounds, a large playing field, library, hall, music room and integral kitchen where the school meals are cooked. The school has 'excellent' links with the feeder infant school and with the local high schools. It is also involved in a business partnership with the local company Richard Millingtons. Pupils take part in all sporting competitions in the area, and the boys' football team were runners up in the league competition in the 1999 season. Other extra-curricular activities include a 'thriving' music and drama tradition. In the summer of 1999 Twelth Night was performed and in 1998, A Midsummer Night's Dream was produced. The school also has a string group that played at Blackburn with Darwen's Celebration of Achievement concert, in 1999. The school encourages pupils to raise money for charity supporting national and international causes such as the MacMillan Nurses and the Kosovo appeal. The school has 'excellent links' with the local community and has 'strong' parental support through the Friends of Meadowhead Association. This organises social and fundraising events for pupils, parents, staff and friends of the school.
