General information

Headteacher: D S Hempsall, appointed in September 1995.

Staff: 9 (men 5, women 4).

Background: Founded in 1509, Queen Elizabeth Grammar is set in leafy surroundings close to the centre of Blackburn. One in five pupils is of Asian heritage. The junior school occupies its own building and is self-contained, but shares a site with the senior school. It also shares its facilities, which include a swimming pool. The school offers timetabled activities to 'develop breadth of interests unrelated to the National Curriculum'. It offers specialist teaching and a wide variety of games including hockey, cricket, soccer and swimming. The choir was the national winner of the AJIS choral competition, and performed in Chester Cathedral in 2000. There is a heavy commitment to charitable fundraising and strong community links. The school is 'strong on traditional family values' and selects all pupils according to academic ability. It became co-educational in 2001.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm but sympathetic. Common codes of conduct apply to classroom and to school environs.'

Uniform: Blue blazer, white shirt, grey pullover, grey short trousers (boys), pleated check skirt (girls), grey socks/tights, school tie, school summer dress. 'Regulations strictly enforced.'

Special needs: There is no specific SEN provision, but those encountering difficulties are given extra help.

Inspection: February 2005: ?The early years and junior school provide a broad education within a caring, friendly environment where individuals are respected and family values are fostered. Pupils achieve high standards in the early years and good standards in the junior school, and they progress well. The heads exercise strong leadership and have a clear vision of what they want to achieve, but their independence and profile are not as strong as they might be to provide fully effective support for future development. The very good welfare and pastoral systems enable pupils to feel confident, and they are well known as individuals. Pupils are courteous and well motivated, and enjoy their school life. Systems for identifying and supporting pupils with special educational needs (SEN), including the gifted and talented, are inconsistent across the sections. Curriculum links between years two and three are not as strong or consistent as they should be. Supervision and facilities for pupils? playtime do not meet all their needs, and information and communication technology (ICT) is not yet used effectively as a tool for learning in the junior school.?.
