General information
Headteacher: David Hempsall, appointed in September 1995.
Staff: 83 (men 48, women 35).
Motto: "Disce Prodesse" ("learn to be of service").
Background: A leading independent school in the northwest region, this year's exam results saw an increase in A grades at A-level with about a fifth of candidates gaining at least three A grades despite the fact that the proportion of top grades (As and Bs) fell slightly. At GCSE, every candidate gained at least five passes at A* to C grade, with [BR]19 getting a clear run of A* and A scores. Academic attainment is just one aspect of the school, however, and the latest inspection report praised its pastoral care. Pupils come from a diversity of backgrounds and the school aims to challenge them and raise expectations for learning. Respect for the individual and personal development are important here. The move to coeducation means girls now make up about 13% of the senior school. Sport is central to life at QEGS the school has won regional prizes that include a run of trophies for football, while three boys finished third this year in the national British Heart Foundation golf competition. Netball courts have been added for girls. [NEXT] The curriculum spans a wide range. Both German and French are available as a first modern language and classical civilisation, Latin and Greek are taught from GCSE upwards. Politics has been on the curriculum for more than 20 years and is taught in the sixth form, as are psychology and economics. The school aims to raise £6m to further improve facilities that include new science laboratories and a laser cutter. There are more than 25 extracurricular activities and a Sportsmark Gold award was renewed in May.
Alumni: Wayne Hemingway, designer; Michael Winterbottom, film director; Krishnan Guru-Murthy, newsreader; Nick Dougherty, golfer.
Approach to discipline: School code focuses on respect for everyone. There is a reward system for positive contributions to school life. Sanctions are administered for unacceptable behaviour.
Uniform: The school uniform consists of:-Blue blazer and grey trousers/skirt.Sixth form ? black blazer/sweater and grey trousers/skirt..
Higher education: 97% (0 Oxford 1 Cambridge).
Special needs: A trained co-ordinator advises colleagues on provision for dyslexia, which may involve external agencies.
Inspection: February 2005: The school is providing good-quality education for pupils from across a wide spectrum of ability and from different social and cultural backgrounds. Nevertheless examination results are largely in line with those of maintained selective schools. Progress towards full coeducation is proceeding slowly and all pupils are well integrated into the school and benefit from a very good system of pastoral care. A complementary studies course greatly increases the breadth of education provided. The activities programme is also wide-ranging and sport, particularly football, is of very high quality. The school develops articulate young people, well prepared for higher education.
