Headteacher: Carol Laverick, appointed in September 1997.

Staff: 14 (women 14).

Background: Founded in 1923; middle school situated at Beardwood Park on outskirts of Blackburn; upper and lower schools on separate sites nearby. While retaining traditional atmosphere, building and facilities have been extensively modernised. All classes have interactive whiteboards; generous teaching space augmented by specialised accommodation for PE, IT and library. Middle school also uses facilities at senior school, such as swimming pool and theatre. Various charities supported. Music and sport at centre of busy extra-curricular programme. .

Approach to discipline: 'Firm but fair. High expectations of behaviour.'

Uniform: Winter: Grey skirt, white shirt, purple jumper. Summer: Green dress, purple cardigan. PE kit: purple shorts, white t-shirt, tracksuit. 'Pupils must wear correct uniform.'

Special needs: Special educational needs register; a few pupils with individual education programmes; very few pupils admitted with special educational needs.
