General information

Background: Opened in 1967, Anchorsholme is based in a 'modern spacious' building in a 'pleasant' residential area north of Blackpool. Each of the 17 classrooms is equipped with its own practical area and storage space. The school has two assembly halls, a purpose-built library, a reading room, a drama and an audio-visual room, a medical room and a curriculum resource area. Gardens surround the main building and a greenhouse is sited close to the school. One corner of the grounds has been developed as an outside classroom and conservation area to support various curriculum projects. There are extensive hard and grass play areas within the school environment. A pre-school playgroup and an after-school care club operate withing the school campus. In September 1998 Anchorsholme received Beacon status. It is an associate school of St Martin's College, Lancaster, and as part of its Beacon School work, staff promote information technology partnership arrangements and mentoring skills. The school's monitoring and evaluation policy operates in all year groups. Teachers regularly observe each others' lessons and 'carefully monitor curriculum continuity and progression throughout the school'. The school was recognised for an Investor in People award in 1998, and won an Education Industry Partnership Award in 1994. A wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered to the pupils and in 1998 two children from the school reached the national finals of the INTEL chess championships. The school supports many charities including raising money for Barnardos.
