General information

Headteacher: Colin White, appointed in September 2001.

Staff: 20 (men 7, women 13).

Background: Arnold Junior is an integral part of Arnold School but has its own buildings and separate organisation. The school houses the kindergarten, infant and junior departments. Music is valued and children have the opportunity to learn wind, string or brass instruments, playing in group ensembles or the junior school orchestra. There is a thriving choir and musical events are held each term. French is also taught. The school competes in sports events locally and in the northwest. There is a large, fully networked information and communication technology centre used by all pupils. Specialist support is available for children with specific learning difficulties, in addition to a part-time teacher, regular screening and assessments. .

Approach to discipline: 'Fair and firm. Courtesy and consideration for others. Every child belongs to every teacher.'

Uniform: Girls: bottle-green pleated skirt, white blouse, tie, green blazer. Boys: grey trousers, white shirt, tie, green blazer.

Special needs: A part-time special needs specialist screens all children and gives additional support to those who need it.

Inspection: November 2004: 'Arnold School?s Junior Department has considerable strengths. It provides its pupils with a very positive environment where very good pastoral care is at the heart of its work. Pupils achieve good standards and their personal development is very good. Pupils speak well of their school and benefit from the good teaching. Very good leadership by the headmaster, together with good governance, ensures that the school?s aims are met. The management of the junior department is sound.'
