General information

Background: Arnold School strives to provide a happy, busy and disciplined environment in which pupils aim for academic excellence and develop character, talent and independence. It has given Lancashire many of its most distinguished citizens and a number of national heroes from cricketers to television's new Robin Hood, Jonas Armstrong. The academic, pastoral and social development of pupils is closely monitored and pupils do well in public exams. Almost allgo on to university with a significant number gaining places at Oxford and Cambridge. Dedicated time is set aside each day so that pupils can participate in a wide range of clubs, societies and other pursuits. There are 34 extracurricular activities from sport, drama and music to Scrabble, the Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and fundraising activities. The school supports a village in Uganda though its own fundraising charity, Village Aid. Sixth-formers get free driving lessons from a local driving school. Sport plays an important role in school life. A number of pupils have earned national and international honours in hockey and fencing and teams go on tours abroad to Barbados, Canada and South Africa. As well as an all-weather playing surface and a fitness suite, Arnold also has its own outdoor education centre at the foot of Helvellyn in the Lake District. The school has recently invested in a new art design centre, a sports complex, an extension to the junior school and a new music department opened by Chris Lowe, a former pupil and member of the Pet Shop Boys.

Alumni: Professor Peter Beighton, geneticist; Peter Purves, television presenter; Tom Graveney, cricketer; Jonas Armstrong, actor.

Inspection: November 2004: The senior department of Arnold School provides an appropriate education for its pupils. It prepares them well for the next stage of their education and for their future lives.
