General information

Background: St Nicholas was founded in the 1830s, and moved to its present site in 1873. The building is an extension of the original St Nicholas church, to which a modern classroom was added in 1973, and a further new classroom and library were completed in 1999. Situated on the edge of Blackpool, in a semi-rural location, the school is 'surrounded by pleasant garden areas, a nature area with pond and a large school field used for sporting and recreation activities'. In addition to the playground, a quiet area is also being constructed in 2000. Clubs and activities at the school include football, netball, athletics, French, recorder, drama and crafts. 'Strong' links exist between the school, the church and the local community. Pupils entertain and visit residents at a local sheltered housing complex, attend events at nearby high school and 'liaise with local firms and businesses'. Each year the school commits itself to supporting a number of local and national charities. The deputy headteacher oversees the delivery of support to children with special educational needs (SEN) and this is achieved through 'curriculum strategies and differentiating work in class, and through close liaison with outside agencies'.
