Background: Bolton School Boys' Division can trace its roots back to 1516, and combines the traditional ethos of academic rigour with a modern, forward-looking approach. Public examination results are among the best in the region and 15% of the teachers have doctorates. Last year the science, computing and law departments won national awards for their excellent A-level results. A wide catchment covered by the school's extensive bus service helps to deliver a good social mix of pupils, which is further enhanced by the proximity of the Girls' Division. Joint activities with the girls include drama productions as well as some sixth-form classes. Open access to the school is offered through support from the bursary scheme, the Ogden Trust and other benefactors. Many lessons are taught in the distinctive pink sandstone main building, which is listed, while science is studied in 15 dedicated laboratories that are due to be redeveloped in the coming year. The school has five computer suites in addition to PCs in the classrooms. The school's sports facilities include a swimming pool, sports hall, gymnasium with climbing wall and 32 acres of sports fields. Every year the school turns out up to 70 school teams and plays 600 fixtures. In the past three years 59 students have won national recognition in sports. Variety is the watchword for education outside the classroom. Each student takes part in a residential outdoor experience every year. There are more than 50 lunchtime clubs and 60 foreign visits to 17 countries over a two-year cycle.
Alumni: Sir Ian McKellen, actor; Sir Harry Kroto, Nobel prize winner for chemistry, 1996; Nigel Short, chess grandmaster; Mark Radcliffe, radio broadcaster.
Higher education: 100% (5 Oxford 2 Cambridge).
Special needs: The school has a special needs co-ordinator and began screening for dyslexia in September. It can cope with pupils with mild Asperger's Syndrome, autism, ADHD and epilepsy.
Inspection: September 2000: This is a very good school, which gives value for money. In both the junior and senior schools there is a very positive atmosphere. Relationships between pupils and between pupils and staff are very good. Pupils are keen to learn, work well and make good progress, although pupils' progress may be assisted by review of some aspects of the curriculum. Teaching overall is of high quality. The school cares for its pupils very well in all respects. The school promotes personal development very successfully. By the end of key stage 5, at age 18, pupils' attainment is high and pupils display impressive personal qualities.
