Background: Set among lawns, playing fields and woodland, Bolton School Girls' Division has been educating bright, well-motivated girls since 1877 and continues its tradition of excellence. Hailed as [L]a highly successful selective school with management and leadership of exceptional quality[R] by inspectors in their last report, it attracts pupils from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. A number of foundation grants are available and from September students entering the sixth form from other schools were able to apply for bursaries. As one of the largest independent girls' schools in the country, Bolton's broad provision includes 30 AS courses and a curriculum-enhanced programme in the sixth form with short courses in arts and science, as well as sessions on health and student finance. While offering all the advantages of a single-sex education, the school undertakes a number of shared activities with the Boys' Division from drama productions to concerts and the Christmas and summer balls. All pupils have access to computers, CD-Roms and the internet. They are also prepared for the future with an extensive programme of work experience and work shadowing, as well as skills-based teaching by the school's award-winning careers department. In a typical week at least 43 extracurricular activities take place at the school and its lease of Patterdale Hall in the Lake District allows pupils to take part in outdoor pursuits, including abseiling and gorge walking. There are also educational trips and exchanges to France, Germany and Spain.
