General information

Background: Opened as Bolton Church of England Educational Institute for boys in 1855; in 1879, girls' school opened and two schools merged in 1900; in 1956, original accommodation considered inadequate for rising number of students and school moved to current location on Oaks Estate. Rebuilding and refurbishment has continued: in 1990, new sports centre with swimming pool opened; in 1998, all-weather pitch and playground completed. In 1995, additional laboratories built; during 1997-8, 14-classroom block added; throughout the 1990s, school kitchens and sixth-form block totally refurbished and food technology area re-designed. New chapel and dance studio in 2004. School is proud of sporting achievements, gaining national honours in basketball, cross-country and swimming, as well as fielding individual international sports players. Other extra-curricular activities include symphonic wind band, which was national champion in 1998 and has produced three CDs. Also has presented high-standard productions of musicals such as Grease and West Side Story. Offers Latin and classical studies, as well as three modern languages. The school has Specialist Performing Arts College Status; Artsmark Gold (2004); Artsmark Silver (2002); Investor in People Status; Leading Edge status; Training School Status.
